Chip in de Rain

"Do you remember three thousand odd All Stars masqueraders playing Sailor on Carnival Monday and Tuesday in the late fifties?

Close your eyes and see them swaying synchronously from side to side on the streets, throwing powder (Cashmère Bouquet made by Cussons) into the crowd, while simultaneously sucking sweet Coca Cola laced with sugar cane distillate from nipples attached to family-size bottles.

Incredibly, the band was so large that about ninety percent of the members could not hear the accompanying steelband music. Yet the sound of the chip...chip chip...of their feet was so metronomic that it created a rhythm that kept them going all day long."

We have now entered the final phase of preparations for the PASIC Convention taking place from November 03 to 08. I cannot help but recall the above paragraphs and the images that I had used so effectively to define The Nostalgic Panyard. This concept was developed by Kenneth Scott and the author in 2002, for a CD by the same name.

In six months, our committee has raised over one million dollars in investment capital for The Rainmakers. Our expanding catalogue has generated another half million. We intend to optimise the forthcoming Christmas and Carnival Seasons to peak sales. Tickets for the concerts at Naparima Bowl and Queen’s Hall in March, 2009 will go on sale from January 02. I am determined that this project must achieve profitability.

After the PASIC convention, the group will return home on November 10. Before spending a few restful days with my daughter Simone in Miami, I will fly to North Carolina to visit Jeffrey W. Fritz. Jeff is a restless; no holds barred audiophile and internationally respected editor-in-chief of the on-line magazine www.ultraaudio.com

Look out for my next feature in this magazine in the December issue, going on line from the first day of that month. This is the sequel to the hilarious combination of words that aptly describes the last thirty years of my professional life, archived in the October issue.

PASIC, here comes The Rainmakers.
